May 31, 2024 – Today,
Govt. Higher Secondary School Akingam marked World No Tobacco Day with a series
of impactful events aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of
tobacco use. The program featured insightful speeches by students and
culminated in a vibrant rally through the streets of Akingam, where students
chanted slogans advocating for a tobacco-free world.
The event
began with an assembly in the school Premises, where several students took
to the stage to address their peers. Each speaker highlighted different aspects
of tobacco's detrimental impact on health and society.
One of
the student emphasized the severe health risks associated with tobacco use,
including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. Alarming
statistics were shared about the number of deaths caused by smoking annually,
urging classmates to avoid tobacco to lead healthier lives.
The another
student spoke about how tobacco addiction can lead to significant economic
burdens on families and society. The discussion highlighted the costs of
medical treatments for tobacco-related diseases and the loss of productivity
due to illness and premature death.
The other
students discussed the dangers of second hand smoke, particularly for children
and non-smokers. The emphasis was on how being around smokers can still expose
individuals to harmful toxins and increase their risk of developing health
problems.
After the speeches, the students organized a rally from the school to the Main Bazaar of Akingam. The rally saw enthusiastic participation, with students carrying banners and placards adorned with anti-tobacco messages. They chanted slogans like "Say No to Tobacco, Yes to Life!", "Be Smart, Don't Start!", "Choose Health, Not Tobacco!", "Tobacco Kills, Quit Today!", "Healthy Lungs, Happy Life!" to capture the attention of the community and spread their message far and wide.
The rally
not only demonstrated the students' commitment to fighting tobacco use but also
engaged the local community, raising awareness about the importance of a
tobacco-free environment.
Head of
the institution Mr. Mohd Abass Rather commended the students for their
dedication and enthusiasm. He remarked, "Today's event is a testament to
the power of education and community action in tackling public health issues. I
am proud of our students for their proactive approach in advocating for a
healthier, tobacco-free future."
